California Alabaster on Belgian marble

12h x 7.5w x 7.5d inches

In Lak’ech Ala K’in is the Mayan moral code meaning “You are my other me.” “Tu eres mi otro yo”.This stone was quarried from the U.S. Gypsum quarry in California's Anza-Borrego Desert and free-carved as a self-portrait. Rather than describing my physical features, the work investigates what lies beneath them. It asks what remains when identity is separated from appearance.

The carving became a process of excavation as much as creation—a search for an essential presence within the material and within myself. By looking beyond the surface of skin, I sought to express an energy that is intangible yet deeply felt. The sculpture is less a representation of a face than a record of that search: an attempt to give form to something invisible, where matter and spirit exist in quiet conversation.

This sculpture is attached to its based with a steel pin inside a brass sleeve. The top half can be rotated 360 degrees on its base for your viewing pleasure.
